Waris boosts Lorient’s survival battle

Striker Majeed Waris continued to prove he is the most in-form Black Stars striker as he netted his ninth goal of the season in the French Ligue 1 on Saturday.

The 25-year-old scored the second goal as Lorient leaped from the relegation zone to 16th with a 5-1 thrashing of Metz.

It was 1-1 at half-time before Lorient ran riot against their visitors at the Stade du Moustoir. Malian forward Cheick Diabate had cancelled Michael Ciani’s opener for Bernard Casoni’s side before Waris restored the lead four minutes into the second half.

Jimmy Cabot then made it 3-1 on the hour mark and added another for his brace six minutes later. Cameroon captain Benjamin Moukandjo put the final nail in the coffin with his 13th goal of the season on 78 minutes.

Lorient have four more games – against Nantes and Bastia on the road as well as Angers and Bordeaux (home) to ensure their stay in the French top flight before the season ends on May 20.
